At the IFA 2026 trade show, iRobot introduced the Roomba Duo, a new robotic cleaning system that combines two distinct units working together to clean homes more effectively. Unlike traditional robotic vacuum cleaners that operate as single units, the Roomba Duo uses two complementary robots: a larger main unit and a smaller, ultra-compact module. These units work in tandem, guided by a shared map created through the Roomba Home App, allowing them to coordinate their cleaning tasks efficiently.
The system is designed to overcome a common challenge in robotic floor maintenance—balancing power and mobility. The main unit, which is larger and more robust, handles large open areas and difficult stains. It features a high-performance motor, large wheels for stability, and a powerful brush that applies significant pressure to lift stubborn dirt. It also includes a steam generator that pre-treats stains and a hot air drying system to protect sensitive surfaces like wooden floors from excess moisture.
The smaller companion robot is specifically designed for tight spaces. Measuring just 8.35 cm in height and 29.8 cm in width, it can easily slip under furniture like sofas and beds. It uses a special mop that extends outward to clean edges and a side brush to clean along walls and baseboards. The robot is equipped with special wheels that allow it to navigate over small obstacles, such as door thresholds, up to 3.5 cm high, ensuring smooth movement between rooms.
The two units communicate in real time using artificial intelligence to divide tasks efficiently. The larger robot focuses on open areas and heavy-duty cleaning, while the smaller one tackles narrow spaces where dirt is less likely to be deeply embedded. Although the Roomba Duo is an impressive innovation, it is currently only a prototype. iRobot has not yet announced a release date or price for the product.
