Electric vehicles purchased in China at a lower cost often see their prices double when exported to Europe, according to recent reports. For example, a sedan that costs around 30,000 euros in China—offering a range of 800 kilometers and ultra-fast charging—is sold at double the price in Europe. However, the European version of the same car often comes with fewer features, such as advanced technologies and additional screens. This price difference is partly due to lower production costs in China, which are supported by government policies. Chinese manufacturers benefit from state support, including free land for factories and tax exemptions, which significantly reduce their production expenses. Manufacturing an electric vehicle in China is estimated to cost about 40% less than in Europe. This cost advantage is also due to direct access to key raw materials like batteries, electric motors, and chips for screens, as well as a cheaper workforce with different labor conditions and social benefits compared to European standards. Exporting these vehicles to Europe introduces additional costs, such as customs duties, logistics, and marketing. Transporting the vehicles by ship or train to Europe adds to the expense, and European customs surcharges vary from 10% (for Tesla) to 17% for BYD. These fees could potentially increase up to nearly 50%, depending on the manufacturer's cooperation with European investigations. To reduce these costs and better serve the European market, some Chinese manufacturers are establishing factories directly in Europe. In China, the highly competitive market forces manufacturers to keep profits low to remain viable. In contrast, the European market is less saturated, and consumers are accustomed to paying higher prices. This allows Chinese manufacturers to maximize their profits when selling in Europe. The significant price difference is not only due to transportation and customs costs but also the result of a broader commercial strategy aimed at adapting to European consumer preferences and market conditions.
