"Bunker," a social thriller directed by Florian Zeller, will premiere at the Deauville Film Festival. The film features stars Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, and Patrick Schwarzenegger, and was honored with the Talent Award. It is also in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it was introduced during the evening of the Talent Award ceremony, which recognized Patrick Schwarzenegger. According to Zeller, he cast Schwarzenegger after being impressed by his "inner fire" during auditions. Schwarzenegger initially hesitated to attend the casting due to it coinciding with his birthday but decided to go and later expressed no regrets about his choice. In the film, Patrick Schwarzenegger plays a young writer launching his first novel at a publishing house where Sofia (Penélope Cruz), an editor, works. Sofia is married to Miguel (Javier Bardem), an architect recently awarded a prestigious prize. Both Sofia and Miguel, who are Spanish, live in London with their two daughters, Lucia and Rosa, and their cat, a Chartreux named Blue. Their home is described as aesthetically pleasing and harmonious, but Sofia often feels a deep sense of melancholy, questioning what is missing from her life. Meanwhile, Miguel becomes increasingly irritable, especially with an intrusive neighbor who damages their garden wall. He then receives a mysterious proposal from representatives of a billionaire offering him the chance to design an unusual, high-budget project in secret. "Bunker" continues the thematic exploration seen in Zeller's earlier works, such as "The Father" (2020), which won two Oscars, and "The Son," which delved into adolescent depression. The film connects the tensions of a divided world with the internal struggles of a couple and their family. Zeller uses minimalist set designs and carefully composed visuals to highlight the paradoxes, emptiness, and absurdity of lives disconnected from reality. The soundtrack blends sharp melodies and percussive sounds, creating a contrast with the visual harmony of the film. According to the film's synopsis, a renowned architect is approached to secretly design a survival bunker for a billionaire who believes the world is coming to an end. As the architect is drawn to the allure of this morally complex project, his wife begins to doubt their marriage. The film questions whether, after seventeen years together, the couple still shares the same values, aspirations, and dreams. "Bunker" is set to be released in theaters soon by Pathé Films.
