Tesla has decided to rename its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in Europe to "Tesla Assisted Driving" (TAD) following discussions with Germany and its Minister of Transport, Steffen Bilger. The change was noted by Sawyer Merritt on X on October 8. The name change was proposed by Tesla after several governments, including Germany, considered the FSD designation misleading. The new name aims to highlight the software's assisted nature and avoid the perception that it is a fully autonomous system.
Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) is classified as level 2+ on the autonomous driving scale, allowing the driver to let go of the steering wheel but requiring them to remain attentive and ready to take control. In France, the name has been translated as "Tesla Conduite Assistée," and in Belgium, the system has been authorized since June following a decision by the Flemish minister of Mobility, Annick De Ridder. The name "Fully Automatic Driving (Supervised)" introduced in August 2025 has been replaced by the new designation.
Tesla has not made any public statements about the change, and the new name has appeared on its European websites. The European Technical Committee for Motor Vehicles (TCMV), which includes experts from member states, discussed the system on October 6 but did not vote. The next vote is expected in December when the committee will meet again.
The shift in naming reflects growing regulatory scrutiny of autonomous driving technologies across Europe. Governments are keen to ensure that drivers are not misled about the capabilities of such systems, which currently require human oversight. This change aligns with broader efforts to establish clearer standards and definitions for driver assistance technologies.
