Garmin releases new Forerunner 170

Garmin has released the Forerunner 170, a new entry-level running watch that brings features from more advanced models into a smaller, more affordable package. This model is aimed at casual runners and fitness enthusiasts who want access to training tools without the higher price tag of premium models.

Design and display features

The Forerunner 170 features a 1.2-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels and an always-on display mode. It also includes a light sensor for improved visibility in different lighting conditions. The watch has a fully plastic casing, making it lightweight at 41 grams but lacking the more premium look of a metal bezel.

Water resistance and durability

The Forerunner 170 is water-resistant up to 5ATM, which means it can be used in the rain, during showers, and for swimming. This makes it suitable for a variety of outdoor and fitness activities without the need for additional protection.

Training features and performance

The watch includes precise heart rate tracking, training status monitoring, and a training readiness score to help users optimize their workouts. It also offers good geolocation tracking, though it lacks dual-frequency GPS and mapping capabilities found in more expensive models.

Battery life and user experience

Battery life is a notable limitation, with the watch lasting only three days when using the always-on display, SpO2 tracking, and GPS. Turning off the always-on display can extend battery life to more than a week, but this is still considered less than ideal compared to similar products in the same price range.

Pricing and availability

The Forerunner 170 is now available for less than 250 euros, with a 100 euro discount available at Joybuy, bringing the price down from 349 euros to 249 euros. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers looking for a feature-rich running watch.
