In Priory Gardens, a park in Orpington, southeast London, five dead parakeets were discovered on Monday, bringing the total number of dead birds found in the area to 43 over the past three weeks. This has raised alarm among local residents and wildlife advocates, as the attacks on animals in the park have reportedly been ongoing since 2020. The incidents have sparked concerns about the treatment of wildlife and the need for stronger protections. According to Rae Gellel, director of the Greenwich Wildlife Network, the birds are often attacked while they are sleeping. Witnesses say that groups of youths have used bright lights to disorient the birds before striking them with catapults and objects like ball bearings, nuts, or bolts. Some reports suggest that these attacks have been recorded and shared on social media platforms such as TikTok, further drawing attention to the issue. The violence has not been limited to parakeets; other animals such as squirrels, pigeons, coots, and ducks have also been targeted. The Greenwich Wildlife Network is calling for stricter regulations on the sale of catapults to individuals under 18 and is urging law enforcement to treat wildlife crime more seriously. Police are currently investigating the incidents with the help of Bromley Council, which has expressed concern over the deaths of the parakeets. Ring-necked parakeets are not native to the UK and are subject to specific legal controls, but Gellel stressed that this does not justify cruelty. She emphasized that all animals, regardless of their origin, have the capacity to suffer, and deliberate harm should not be tolerated. Legal wildlife control, when permitted, must still follow welfare guidelines, and attacks that cause severe injury should not be overlooked simply because of the species involved. The ongoing attacks have drawn significant media coverage and the attention of local councillors. Despite previous protests, police reports, and political engagement, the violence has continued. The Greenwich Wildlife Network is once again urging authorities to treat the situation with the seriousness it deserves, to thoroughly investigate the circumstances behind the deaths, and to take meaningful steps to protect the wildlife of Priory Gardens.
