Sicily hit by waterspouts

Sicily was struck by two waterspouts on Friday, October 9, causing significant damage and approximately twenty injuries. The event occurred in the coastal area of the island, where waterspouts are relatively rare but not unheard of.

School damaged by the storm

A local school was among the affected buildings, with more than 270 students inside at the time of the incident. The structure suffered damage to its roof and windows, though no major structural collapse was reported.

Injuries and response

Emergency services responded quickly to the situation, treating the injured and assessing the damage. Most of the injured were reported to have minor injuries, and the school was temporarily closed for safety checks.

Waterspouts explained

Waterspouts are rotating columns of air that form over water, similar to tornadoes but typically less intense. They can cause damage when they move over land or strike structures, as happened in this case.
