Parisian museum offers yoga among paintings

In Paris, the Gustave Moreau museum offers a unique experience where yoga is practiced among the works of the symbolist painter in his former home-studio. This unconventional setting allows participants to engage with art in a deeply personal and immersive way.

Yoga in a historic art space

Every Monday evening, yoga mats are placed in the former studio of Gustave Moreau, a space that once served as both his home and artistic workspace. The studio is located on the second floor of the museum and is surrounded by the artist’s symbolist paintings, which cover the walls from floor to ceiling.

A different kind of art experience

Unlike typical yoga studios, this session takes place in a space designed by the artist himself, which he later donated to the French state. The museum now houses nearly 20,000 works, creating an environment where art extends beyond traditional frames and into the very architecture of the building.

Combining dynamic and yin yoga

The class includes both dynamic yoga and yin yoga, which involves holding postures for several minutes to encourage deep breathing and physical relaxation. After the session, a guided meditation is held, focusing on a different artwork each week.

Connecting with the art through meditation

During the meditation, participants are encouraged to let the paintings become more than just objects of contemplation. Instead, they serve as a starting point for a deeper, more personal experience that bridges the viewer and the viewed.

Practical details for visitors

Yoga sessions at the Gustave Moreau museum take place every Monday from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The cost is 20 euros, and reservations can be made through the museum’s ticket office. Mats are available for those who need them.
