A father-in-law of a murder victim attacked the killer during a sentencing hearing in an Arizona courtroom. Alberto Ontiveros-Sanchez, 55, had just finished delivering his victim impact statement on Wednesday when he lunged at Abel Uribe, 33. Ontiveros-Sanchez’s son-in-law, Army Captain David Navidad-Parra, 27, was found dead by Phoenix police with a gunshot wound in December 2022. Uribe was arrested in connection with the murder and later pleaded guilty. In a video of the courtroom incident, Ontiveros-Sanchez was seen leaving the lectern and moving to the defense table, where he struck Uribe—restrained with handcuffs and leg chains—several times with his hand. Chaos followed, with others pulling Ontiveros-Sanchez away from Uribe before people began leaving the courtroom. Ontiveros-Sanchez was arrested afterward and later appeared in court for his own hearing. Ontiveros-Sanchez’s attorney, Christian Lueders, explained to the judge that his client was extremely emotional after delivering his remarks and saw Uribe laughing and snickering, which triggered his outburst. The judge acknowledged Ontiveros-Sanchez’s emotions but emphasized that violence would not be tolerated. The judge allowed Ontiveros-Sanchez to be released but noted he now faces charges, including aggravated assault. Earlier in the sentencing hearing, Ontiveros-Sanchez had urged the court to give Uribe the maximum punishment, saying that any lesser sentence would not be justice for his son-in-law. Police discovered Navidad-Parra’s body on December 17, 2022, and learned of a missing person report linked to a test drive of a car he was trying to sell. Authorities confirmed the missing man was Navidad-Parra, and Uribe was arrested that same day. After the incident with Ontiveros-Sanchez, the sentencing hearing resumed, and Uribe was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. The case has drawn attention to the emotional toll of murder trials and the challenges faced by families seeking justice.
