Manchester City have agreed to pay a joint-British transfer record fee of £125 million for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The deal was reached after 24 hours of negotiations between the two clubs. Fernandez, 25, will now undergo a medical examination ahead of signing a long-term contract with City. Personal terms are not expected to pose any issues. Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record fee of £107 million. His move to City matches the £125 million Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer. This deal is the second-largest sale in Chelsea's history, following Eden Hazard's £118 million transfer to Real Madrid in 2019. It also means Chelsea is set to break their own Premier League record for income from player sales this summer. Chelsea had set a deadline of 17:00 BST on 14 August for clubs to make offers of £120 million or more, aiming to finalize transfers before the 2026-27 season begins. This is the second time this summer that City have broken their own transfer record, after signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million. Fernandez becomes the fourth player to move to a Premier League club for at least £100 million this summer, joining Morgan Rogers (£117 million to Chelsea), Bradley Barcola (£123 million to Liverpool), and City's Anderson. Fernandez was not involved in Chelsea's 4-3 Premier League win over Brighton or their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Luton, as reports from Argentina suggested he requested to be left out of the squad. He had been targeting a move to Real Madrid, but the Spanish club ruled out making an offer. Chelsea needed to reduce their squad size after finishing 10th in the Premier League last season and going trophyless. With Fernandez's departure, along with the £65 million sale of Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa and Liam Delap's £50 million move to Nottingham Forest, the club is on track to break their own record for summer sales, expected to exceed £400 million. This is a significant increase from the previous record of around £300 million set by Chelsea last season. City have also sold Savio to Tottenham for £75 million and will receive £60 million next summer when Omar Marmoush's loan move is made permanent. City have strengthened their squad by signing 18-year-old midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi from Lille for £86 million, Brazilian winger Allan Elias for £34 million, and winger Jeremy Monga and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli for smaller fees. Their total summer spending could rise further with Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye set to join after a deal worth up to £65 million was agreed. Fernandez previously worked with City manager Enzo Maresca during Maresca's time at Chelsea. Maresca is eager to work with him again after several key midfielders have left this summer. Four midfielders have departed Etihad Stadium this summer—Tijjani Reijnders to Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah for £52 million, Rodri to Barcelona for £65 million, Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle for £52 million, and Bernardo Silva, who left earlier in the summer to join Real Madrid as a free agent.
