Lufthansa is once again celebrating its connection to Bavarian culture by having its crew members wear traditional costumes on select long-haul flights during the 2026 Oktoberfest, which runs from September 19 to October 4. The first flights featuring the new uniforms departed on September 19 from Munich: flight LH764 to Bangalore and flight LH722 to Beijing. A third flight, LH768 to Singapore, is set for September 27. These flights are part of a promotional campaign tied to one of Munich's most important annual events, Oktoberfest, a traditional Bavarian festival known for its beer, music, and folk culture.
The new costumes were designed by Spieth & Wensky, a company based in Lower Bavaria that specializes in traditional clothing. Lufthansa aimed to combine the elements of Bavarian Tracht—a traditional dress style that includes skirts, vests, and knitwear—with its own brand identity. The airline’s crane logo, a symbol of the company, is featured on the buttons of the knitwear, while the « Wing Pattern », a unique design motif used by Lufthansa, is woven into the skirts and vests. This approach allows the airline to showcase its brand while still honoring Bavarian heritage.
Heiko Reitz, a member of the Lufthansa Airlines board and head of the Munich hub, explained that crews have been wearing Bavarian costumes on long-haul flights during Oktoberfest for the past 20 years. He noted that the new design continues this long-standing tradition, reinforcing the link between the airline and Munich. The first such flight with a crew in traditional attire took place in 2006 when Lufthansa flew from Munich to New York. The practice has since become an important part of the airline’s identity at the Munich hub, which is the second-largest base for Lufthansa after Frankfurt and serves as a gateway to Bavaria.
In addition to the costume initiative, Lufthansa is offering Bavarian-themed menus on selected intercontinental flights departing from Munich and Frankfurt from September 1 to September 30. The menu includes dishes like Weisswurst terrine, pretzels, roasted duck, and apple strudel. In business class on European flights, an Oktoberfest menu will be available until October 6. Lufthansa lounges in Germany are also participating by serving Bavarian beers, regional dishes, and festive decorations. Passengers traveling on long-haul flights from Germany in First, Business, and Premium Economy classes will also receive comfort pouches made of felt, inspired by the Oktoberfest theme, until the end of September.
