Sony has unveiled two new wireless headsets for PlayStation users: the PlayStation Pulse and the Pulse Edge. These headsets use a special type of audio technology called planar magnetic drivers, which are known for producing clearer sound with less distortion. They also support PlayStation Link, a connectivity system designed specifically for PlayStation devices, as well as Bluetooth for broader compatibility with other devices. Planar magnetic drivers work by using thin, flat diaphragms positioned between magnets to produce sound. This design allows for more precise audio reproduction, especially in terms of bass and directional cues, which are important for gaming experiences like first-person shooters where identifying the direction of sounds—such as footsteps—can be crucial. Sony first introduced planar magnetic technology in its PlayStation Pulse Elite headset in 2024 after acquiring the high-end audio brand Audeze, which was already known for using this technology. The new Pulse and Pulse Edge headsets offer features tailored for gamers. PlayStation Link allows for ultra-low latency audio, ensuring that sound matches on-screen action precisely. It also lets users switch seamlessly between compatible devices like the PS5, PlayStation Portal, and even PCs and Macs. Both models include AI-enhanced microphones that reduce background noise during voice chats. However, the Pulse Edge offers additional features, such as double the number of magnets for deeper bass, active noise cancellation, and a detachable boom microphone for clearer communication. While both headsets are not yet available for purchase, the Pulse Edge is expected to be the more expensive option. For context, Sony’s existing Pulse Elite model is currently priced at $149 on Amazon. Meanwhile, a PlayStation version of the Audeze Maxwell 2, a newer model unveiled at CES 2026, is priced at $329, suggesting that the Pulse Edge may fall somewhere in that range.
