A play titled Pre-Existing Condition, written by Marin Ireland, is currently being performed at the Greenwich House Theater in New York City. The play focuses on the emotional and psychological aftermath of a breakup caused by domestic abuse, following the life of a character named A. It highlights the complex emotions and challenges faced by survivors, offering a deeply personal and powerful narrative. What makes this production unique is its rotating cast of female actors playing the lead role. Notable performers who have taken on the role include Lupita Nyong’o, Phillipa Soo, Susannah Flood, Hari Nef, Edie Falco, and Whitney White. The play originally premiered in 2024 at New York’s Connelly Theater Upstairs, where previous actors such as Tatiana Maslany, Edie Falco, and Deirdre O’Connell also performed. The title of the play refers to a controversial practice in which some U.S. states classified domestic violence as a "pre-existing condition," allowing insurance companies to deny coverage to victims as recently as 2010. Marin Ireland’s play is based on her own experience with domestic abuse, involving her former partner, actor Scott Shepherd. In 2012, during a rehearsal in London, Shepherd struck her, an event that inspired the creation of the play. The story is supported by three additional performers—Greg Keller, Dael Orlandersmith, and Sarah Steele—who portray a range of characters, including friends, family members, and social workers, providing context and support to A’s journey. Directed by Maria Dizzia, the production features set design by Cate McCrea and costumes by Enver Chakartash, contributing to the play’s immersive and emotionally resonant atmosphere. Pre-Existing Condition will continue to run at the Greenwich House Theater through January 8, 2027, offering audiences a chance to engage with this important and timely story.
