Former Wales captain Ashley Williams and ex-Swansea manager Alan Sheehan have joined Craig Bellamy’s coaching staff as assistant coaches ahead of Wales’ upcoming Nations League matches. Williams, 42, has made 86 appearances for Wales and captained the team during their historic run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals. A former central defender and holder of a UEFA A License, Williams has been involved in coaching Wales' youth teams in recent years, but this marks his first senior coaching role. His experience on the field and in youth development makes him a valuable addition to Bellamy’s team. Alan Sheehan, 39, was recently dismissed as Swansea City’s head coach in November 2025. A former Republic of Ireland youth international, Sheehan has previously worked as an assistant coach at Swansea, Southampton, and Luton Town. His appointment comes after James Rowberry left the Wales coaching staff due to his responsibilities with Stoke City in the Championship. This is part of a series of changes in Bellamy’s backroom staff, as Dutch coach Piet Cremers also left earlier this year to take charge of Club NXT, the youth academy team of Belgian club Club Brugge. Andrew Crofts, a former Wales international, continues in his role as assistant coach despite recently joining Tottenham Hotspur. His presence provides continuity in the coaching setup as Wales prepares for their Nations League campaign. The team will begin their matches in Group 2 of the Nations League A on September 24, when they face Portugal in Lisbon. They will then travel to Copenhagen to take on Denmark on September 27. Craig Bellamy, who had been in discussions about taking the managerial role at Burnley in August, is set to name his final squad for the Nations League on September 15. The new coaching staff, including Williams and Sheehan, will play a key role in shaping Wales’ performance in the tournament, which aims to test the nation’s top teams against each other in a competitive format.
