A video showing a teenage girl being sexually assaulted and her male friend beaten by a group of men in India's Bihar state has sparked widespread outrage. The two minors, both students in the 10th grade, were stopped in the Jamui district on September 19. The footage, which circulated online, shows them being surrounded and repeatedly pleading to be let go. In the video, the boy is slapped and pulled by his collar, while the girl is touched inappropriately. In another clip, a man is seen carrying her away as the boy tries to intervene. Three minors have been arrested in connection with the assault, and a special investigation team has been formed to find the other suspects. The incident occurred around 7:00 PM local time on Saturday, but it came to light on Monday after the video went viral. The teenagers attended the same coaching institute and had gone to the area to take photographs after their classes, according to police. The Jamui police chief said neither of them had initially reported the incident. Officers began investigating after the video spread online and traced the pair using the registration number of a vehicle visible in the footage. Their statements were recorded, and a case was registered following a written complaint from the girl. The case was filed under India's Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso), and police have also invoked sections of the criminal code related to assault, criminal force against a woman, and acts carried out with a common intention. Senior police officials said three minors had been arrested and that investigators had identified two other suspects. Police have also taken action against 32 social media accounts accused of sharing the video. The shocking nature of the assault has provoked strong reactions online, with many users expressing horror and questioning why a group of men felt they had the right to confront two teenagers for being together. Some described the incident as an extreme form of "moral policing," while others called on Bihar police to take strict action. Shreyasi Singh, a Bihar minister and legislator from Jamui, told NDTV news that the incident had brought "shame to society." Singh, a former international-level sport shooter, noted that while women in Bihar are making progress in various fields, safety concerns remain. She urged authorities to arrest the remaining suspects and take strict action against those responsible. Opposition leaders have used the case to criticize the state government's handling of women's safety. Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader of India's main opposition Congress party, called the footage "deeply disturbing" and said the incident reflected a patriarchal belief that men could control a girl's body, movements, and choices. "This is not culture. It is patriarchy," he wrote on social media. Tejashwi Yadav, the opposition leader in Bihar, said the incident left him "deeply ashamed" and accused the government of failing to ensure the safety of women and girls in the state. Members of Bihar's governing coalition rejected the opposition's broader criticism of the state's law-and-order record, stating that those responsible for the attack would face strict action. India's National Commission for Women has also intervened, calling for all those involved to be identified and arrested and for an impartial investigation. The commission has requested a report from Bihar police and urged authorities to prevent further sharing of the video to protect the girl's identity and privacy. The Bihar State Women's Commission has also sought information from district authorities about the actions being taken in the case.
