A 32-year-old man has died in hospital following a serious assault that took place on the Central line platform at Liverpool Street Underground station on Sunday evening at 10:51pm. The victim had been attending the Families and Children's Day event at the Notting Hill Carnival in west London and was on his way home when the attack occurred. British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed that the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition on Sunday night and passed away on Tuesday. Jeremiah Maximo, a 38-year-old man from Barking, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm. However, BTP has stated that they will seek to amend the charge to reflect the victim's death. Maximo is expected to appear in court at a later date. BTP Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and encouraged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to help with the investigation. The assault happened on the first day of the Notting Hill Carnival, one of London’s largest and most vibrant street festivals. The Metropolitan Police reported making 169 arrests throughout the day for various offenses, including drug possession, weapon possession, assault, and sexual offenses. Despite these incidents, the Met noted that the overall atmosphere at the event remained "overwhelmingly positive and celebratory." Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault, which has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a festive occasion. The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing large public events, where the potential for both celebration and conflict exists. As the case moves forward, police are urging witnesses to provide any information that could assist in bringing those responsible to justice.
