Fire continues in Bergerac

A fire that started in the town of Bergerac in the Dordogne department during the night of October 28 to 29 is still burning. The fire began in an apartment within the historic, protected quarter of the town, which is known for its architectural heritage.

Multiple communities involved in firefighting

Firefighters from several nearby communes, including Bergerac, Eymet, Issigeac, Mussidan, Périgueux, and Villamblard, are working to contain the blaze. Their efforts are supported by a demolition machine being transported from Pau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region.

Significant damage and displacement

According to the mayor of Bergerac, Fabien Ruet, 11 homes have been completely destroyed out of 36 affected by the fire. The fire has consumed a large part of the historic center, forcing about thirty people to relocate temporarily.

Demolition efforts to begin soon

A demolition machine is expected to arrive by the end of the morning to address a facade at risk of collapsing. Firefighters are currently using water hoses to reach hot spots in the areas of Les Fontaines and Saint-James, where alarms are still ringing.

Structural concerns and ongoing operations

The fire has weakened the walls of several buildings, some of which are on the verge of collapse. Firefighters and officials are prioritizing control and monitoring of the situation until the demolition machine arrives. Approximately 75 firefighters and 30 vehicles are still on site.

Officials to meet on next steps

Elected officials are set to meet at the town hall to discuss the next steps in managing the fire and its aftermath. No casualties have been reported, and relief efforts have begun to support those affected.
