The Hy-fen pipeline, a key part of the H2Med hydrogen transport corridor, is beginning a public consultation phase as it takes shape. This proposed pipeline aims to cross France from north to south, carrying zero-carbon hydrogen produced in the Iberian Peninsula to energy-intensive industries in northern Europe. The project is designed to support the transition to cleaner energy sources by delivering hydrogen, a fuel that emits no carbon when used, to regions that rely heavily on industrial activity.
The Hy-fen pipeline, planned by Natran, would stretch 820 kilometers across France. As a core component of the H2Med initiative, it is expected to transport 2 million tons of hydrogen annually from southern France to Germany. Before it can be completed, Natran must finalize the pipeline's route, which will be only about ten meters wide. This process involves evaluating various constraints, including the regions it will cross and other large-scale projects that may be planned in the same area.
Currently, the public consultation phase is underway, involving 512 French communes. The consultation is set to conclude on December 20, 2026. Once the route is finalized, construction is expected to begin around 2030. The pipeline would start in Fos-sur-Mer and extend to the German border, passing through several French regions, including PACA, Occitanie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and Grand Est.
The H2Med project includes multiple interconnections to facilitate the transport of hydrogen produced in Spain and Portugal to industrial centers in northern Europe. The goal is to deliver 2 million tons of hydrogen annually, which would meet about 10% of Europe's estimated demand. Other parts of the project include the BarMar initiative, which aims to link Barcelona and Marseille. In this effort, France is central not only to the transportation of hydrogen but also potentially to its use in industries such as steel production, chemical manufacturing, and synthetic fuel development, especially in the northern part of the country.
