West Africa is a key region for gold mining, home to major mines such as Ahafo, Loulo-Gounkoto, and Fekola. The British mining company Panthera Resources has identified initial discovery potential between 0.7 and 1.6 million ounces of gold at its Bido gold project in Burkina Faso. This estimate, announced on October 8, is based on preliminary findings and will require further exploration to confirm. The results come from an inverse circulation (RC) drilling program started in 2026, which found several significant gold deposits, including 56 meters of gold at a concentration of 1.16 grams per tonne from a depth of 76 meters in one of the drill sites. These findings are the foundation for the first discovery target at Bido.
Panthera Resources also holds several other projects in West Africa. In Burkina Faso, the company is involved in the Cascades project, where an initial estimate suggested 635,000 ounces of indicated and inferred gold resources. Panthera is a minority shareholder in the operator Moydow, holding 20% of the shares. In Mali, the company is exploring the Kalaka project, which had an initial resource estimate of 803,000 ounces of inferred gold in February 2025. Panthera is also working on the Bassala project in Mali, where five separate gold prospects have been identified.
In its September financial report, Panthera stated it is continuing to restructure its operations in West Africa. The company plans to reassess the options for maximizing the value of its gold portfolio after the next renewal of the Kalaka project license. The goal is to create value and secure the necessary funding to develop its assets. At the same time, Panthera will continue its exploration and development work on its main projects, including Bassala, Kalaka, Bido, and Cascades, while minimizing the dilution of shareholder value.
The potential for these projects remains dependent on several factors, including the renewal of licenses for the Malian projects. In addition to the resources already identified and the discovery targets, Panthera must conduct further exploration and secure the necessary investments to advance its projects to more developed stages. This could bring the projects closer to industrial-scale gold extraction, but significant work remains before that stage is reached.
