Google is rolling out new health tracking features for its Pixel Watch 5 this week, with the first trend reports expected to be available in early October. The features include tracking blood pressure trends, insulin resistance, and sleep breathing quality. These capabilities are part of Google’s Health Guardian toolset, which was introduced with the latest Pixel smartwatch last month. Initially, these health tracking tools were not available when the Pixel Watch 5 was first reviewed, but the upcoming update could make the device more appealing if the features work well in practice.
The Health Guardian features will begin appearing in the Google Health app this week, with the first set of trend reports becoming available in early October. These updates will allow users of Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 models to track their blood pressure, insulin resistance, and sleep breathing quality. Additionally, users with the fourth and fifth generation Pixel Watch in European countries will gain access to the Breathing Emergency Detection tool. This feature automatically contacts emergency services if the watch detects a significant drop in blood oxygen levels, potentially offering an added layer of safety.
Pixel smartwatch owners will be able to access these new health features at no extra cost. Meanwhile, users of the Fitbit Air who have a Google Health Premium subscription will also be able to use the insulin resistance and blood pressure trend tracking features later this year. However, Google has not yet provided a specific release date for these features on the Fitbit Air.
This update highlights Google's ongoing efforts to enhance the health monitoring capabilities of its wearable devices. As more features become available, the Pixel Watch and other compatible devices may offer users greater insight into their health and potentially help in early detection of certain conditions.
