Shea Charles, Northern Ireland’s most expensive footballer at a staggering £30 million, has said he is not overly worried about the pressure that comes with being the country’s highest-paid player after joining Fulham from Southampton in a record-breaking deal. Charles has already featured in all five of Fulham’s Premier League matches this season, showing he is quickly settling into his new team. Despite the high expectations, Charles has emphasized that his main focus remains on international duty as Northern Ireland prepares for a crucial four-game Nations League campaign against Georgia, Hungary, and Ukraine. Charles made his debut for the national team in June 2022 and has since earned 35 caps. He believes that playing for Northern Ireland has been vital to his growth as a player, giving him the chance to face stronger competition than he encountered in the Championship. He also acknowledged the trust shown in him by manager Michael O’Neill, who has frequently started him in matches and even handed him the captain’s armband on occasion. Charles is not the only member of his family involved in international football. His brother, Pierce Charles, is a goalkeeper currently on loan at Queen’s Park Rangers from Manchester City. The two have played together for Northern Ireland and have shared a strong bond since childhood. Their connection has been a source of support and motivation for both players on the international stage. Shea Charles qualifies to play for Northern Ireland through his mother, and he has spoken about how proud she is of both him and his brother. She often attends matches and travels to away games whenever possible. Charles expressed confidence in the strength of the Northern Ireland squad, describing it as a close-knit team where new players are quickly integrated and supported.
