Lyon cancels event for political book talk

The city of Lyon canceled a scheduled event for a political book talk by Raphaël Arnault, a deputy from the France Insoumise party, set to take place on November 5 in the 8th arrondissement. The event was to promote his book Antifasciste and was to include Anaïs Belouassa-Cherifi, a deputy from Rhône and member of the same party.

Deputy plans legal action

Anaïs Belouassa-Cherifi announced she would file a lawsuit with the administrative court in Lyon after the cancellation. She accused the local administration of using "police power" to block what she called a legitimate political and literary event, arguing that it violates free expression.

City cites security risks

The city of Lyon explained the cancellation was due to security concerns, citing the planned social mobilization on November 5. Officials said the event could have created tension and that organizers themselves had raised security risks. The city emphasized its commitment to free expression but stressed the need for peaceful conditions.

Mayor seeks postponement

Mayor Grégory Doucet said he supported postponing the event, citing the potential for conflict on a day of planned social protests. He considered it unreasonable to hold the event elsewhere in the city, fearing it could attract opposing forces and cause unrest.

Legal challenge aims to protect freedoms

Belouassa-Cherifi plans to use a "freedom reference" legal procedure, which is an urgent measure to protect fundamental rights. She called on the mayor and regional authorities to ensure the event takes place, stating that the principles of free expression and assembly are central to the French Republic.
