French player eliminated in quarterfinals

French tennis player Corentin Moutet, ranked 94th in the world, was eliminated on Friday, October 23, in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 Lyon tournament by American player Tommy Paul, ranked 15th in the world, in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) following a match lasting 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Moutet's return to ATP circuit

Moutet had previously defeated Ugo Humbert and Félix Balshaw in the tournament, marking his return to the ATP circuit after a wrist injury forced him to withdraw from the US Open in early September and skip the Asian tour. His return included a victory over Humbert in a marathon match of 3 hours and 21 minutes (6-2, 6-7(5), 7-6(4)), despite cramps, and a win over Balshaw (6-4, 6-4), giving him two consecutive main-circuit wins for the first time since the Australian Open in January.

Paul dominates in key moments

Despite winning 103 points compared to Paul's 105 and earning 14 break points against Paul's 10, Moutet converted only four of his break points, while Paul managed five. Paul broke Moutet's serve three times in the third set, which proved decisive. The American had previously defeated Moutet at the Paris 2024 Olympics and in Delray Beach earlier this year, and this was their third meeting, with Paul securing his third consecutive win over the French player.

Moutet's ranking implications

Paul will face the winner of the match between Taylor Fritz and Daniel Altmaier in the semifinals. For Moutet, the loss means he will leave the top 100 in the world rankings on Monday, October 26. Moutet had hoped to extend his week in Lyon by defeating Paul, one of the tournament favorites, but the third encounter did not deviate from the pattern of previous matches. The match was described as interminable and extremely contested, with Paul ultimately prevailing after nearly three hours of play.
