A man who was injured during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, has died, according to lawmakers. House Republicans expressed their condolences on social media, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Copenhaver," who was seriously wounded in the shooting. The post praised Copenhaver for his strength and perseverance during his recovery and extended their support to his family and loved ones, offering prayers during this difficult time. Copenhaver, a Pennsylvania resident, was at a Trump campaign rally in Butler on July 13, 2024, when a gunman opened fire from a rooftop. He was shot twice—once in his abdomen and once in his left tricep, according to one report, while another account stated that one bullet hit his triceps, and another caused damage to his colon, resulting in nerve damage. He was hospitalized for about a week before being discharged. Copenhaver’s family released a statement through Allegheny Health Network, thanking first responders, medics, and hospital staff for their care. The statement highlighted the support he received during his recovery. Another individual injured in the shooting, David Dutch of New Kensington, also spoke publicly about the experience nearly a year after the event. Corey Comperatore, a 70-year-old man, was killed in the attack. In a televised interview with KDKA-TV, Copenhaver described the moment he was shot. He recalled being distracted by the Jumbotron behind him when he felt his sleeve being pulled. "I could see a portion of it going by pretty fast, and I heard 'pew,'” he said. “I didn’t realize at the time that I had gotten shot. But I turned around, and that’s when I got the second shot." He described the second injury as a jolt that did not knock him down but left him unwilling to stand.
