Almost half of UK professionals—46%—are now taking packed lunches to work more frequently than they did a year ago, according to a poll conducted for online grocer Ocado. The shift is especially noticeable among younger workers, with 64% of those aged 18 to 45 reporting they are bringing lunch to work more often. This trend is driven in part by rising costs, as 69% of respondents said buying lunch near their office has become too expensive. Additionally, 72% of those surveyed believe bringing food from home helps them better manage their household budgets. Health and nutrition are also playing a significant role in the growing popularity of packed lunches. Nearly two-thirds (66%) of respondents said that preparing their own meals makes it easier to eat healthily and monitor calorie intake. Traditional sandwiches remain a staple, with 52% of packed lunches including them. However, there has been a noticeable shift in preferences, with online searches for "lunch bowls" and lunchbox snacks increasing by 79% compared to the same period last year. Sales of ziplock bags have also risen by 60%, indicating a growing demand for convenient storage solutions. Snack items are also seeing increased interest, with Babybel cheese snacks experiencing a 34% rise in sales year on year. These trends suggest that consumers are looking for both affordability and variety in their lunch choices. Dan Elton, chief customer officer at Ocado Retail, noted that people are increasingly seeking "smart, practical ways to save money" and are embracing packed lunches as part of their daily routine to reduce spending on food on the go. He added that search trends highlight a clear demand for "affordable, inspiring options" among customers. The survey was conducted by Clariti, a market research firm, and included 2,126 UK adults in August. The findings reflect a broader movement toward cost-conscious living, with many individuals reevaluating their spending habits in response to economic pressures. As more people look for ways to stretch their budgets, the rise in packed lunches and related product searches indicates a shift in consumer behavior that is likely to continue.
