Alex Bell, a former Olympic finalist in the 800-meter track event, has shifted her focus to road running and will compete in the women's half marathon at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. Bell, who once reached a personal best of 1:57 in the 800m, decided to step away from the event after feeling she had reached the peak of her potential. She now finds new motivation in the longer distances of road racing, where she recently set a half marathon personal best of 69:35 in Dubai and a 10km time of 30:57 in Valencia. Bell is expected to make her marathon debut later this year, signaling a significant shift in her athletic career. She admitted that she lost motivation in the 800m towards the end of her career, feeling that she had achieved her ultimate goal in that event. In contrast, she finds road running to be a more open field for improvement and growth. Bell also mentioned that she no longer feels anxious about watching 800m races, a feeling she once associated with track events. She is not envious of the current generation of 800m athletes, including Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell, and is excited about the future of road running. Road running, which takes place on city streets rather than on a track, is often seen as more accessible to the general public. Bell highlighted this aspect, noting that road races are easier for people to engage with and follow compared to track events. The Copenhagen half marathon will feature strong competitors such as Agnes Ngetich, Tsigie Gebreselama, and Klara Lukan, making it a challenging but exciting opportunity for Bell to test herself against the world's best. Bell expressed disappointment at not having a third British athlete to compete in the team standings, but she remains focused on performing well alongside teammate Samantha Harrison. Her goal is to learn from each race and continue improving as she transitions into this new chapter of her athletic journey.
