Ali Carter, a 47-year-old professional snooker player, is currently competing in the English Open final against Mark Williams in Brentwood. However, he is struggling with memory issues that have affected his recollection of key moments in his career, including two World Championship finals and a rare 147 maximum break he achieved at the Crucible in 2008. These lapses in memory are linked to health challenges he has faced over the years. Carter has long dealt with Crohn's disease, a chronic condition that affects the digestive system. His health took a more severe turn in 2013 when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lung. At the time, he feared for his life but made a remarkable recovery. He returned to competitive snooker and won his first tournament after chemotherapy at the 2014 General Cup, showing incredible resilience. Despite his recovery, the health struggles have left a lasting impact on his memory, particularly regarding events that occurred before his cancer diagnosis. Carter admitted he can no longer recall his two encounters with Ronnie O'Sullivan at the World Championship or the 147 break he made in 2008. While he is not universally popular among snooker fans, possibly due to his rivalry with O'Sullivan, he believes that many who dislike him simply don't know him personally. He remarked, "Generally the people that don't like me have never met me. I might come across like a grumpy old git on the tele but I have got a happy side, somewhere." Carter described his chemotherapy experience in 2014 as extremely grueling, both physically and emotionally. He detailed the long days in the hospital, which involved two hours of chemo, an hour of fluids, and repeated cycles, lasting from nine in the morning until half past five or six in the evening. He experienced a range of side effects, including fatigue, nausea, sore fingertips, difficulty eating, mouth sores, tinnitus, vision issues, and a loss of libido. He stated he would not be sure he could endure the treatment again if faced with a similar situation.
