Oil well eruption ongoing in Niger

An oil well eruption in Niger's Diffa region remains uncontrolled as of October 12, according to the Ministry of Petroleum. The incident, which began on September 25, 2026, involves the projection of large quantities of crude oil and gas more than ten meters high at the Goumeri W-8 oil well on the Agadem block.

Damaged platform and compromised neighboring wells

The platform at the Goumeri W-8 well, operated by CNPC Niger Petroleum S.A., is heavily damaged. The ministry reported that the integrity of the two neighboring wells, Goumeri W-3 and W-4, is also compromised, indicating potential risks to the surrounding area.

No casualties reported but two hospitalized

As of October 12, no human casualties were reported from the incident. However, two employees who were exposed to the conditions on the first day of the eruption had been hospitalized, highlighting the potential dangers faced by those on site.

Efforts to contain and control the spill

Specialized teams are working day and night to secure the site and attempt to regain control of the well. The spilled oil is being contained using dikes, trenches, and basins before being recovered and transported to the Goumeri treatment station for processing.

Algerian experts join containment efforts

On October 14, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum's official Facebook page reported the mobilization of Algerian experts alongside Nigerian teams. Their mission includes determining the causes of the eruption, assessing the technical and environmental damage, and proposing solutions to mitigate the impact of the incident.
