PSG draws with Manchester City in Champions League

In the third round of the Women's Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a 1-1 draw against Manchester City, the reigning English champions, on Thursday. The result marked a significant improvement for PSG, who had struggled in their campaign last year.

Injury sidelines PSG captain

The draw earned PSG a valuable fifth point, though the match was overshadowed by the injury exit of captain Sakina Karchaoui, who suffered a right ankle injury in the 79th minute. Her absence will be a significant loss for the team moving forward.

Penalty and quick response

The match saw PSG concede a penalty in the 85th minute due to a strong tackle by Griedge Mbock in her area, allowing Manchester City's Jamaican forward Khadija Shaw to score. However, PSG quickly responded, equalizing in the 88th minute through Tara Elimbi Gilbert, who capitalized on a run set up by Mbock against an off-guard English defense.

PSG's coach praises the result

"I am very proud, it's a good point taken," said the young PSG defender to the L'Equipe channel. The team's ability to come back in the final minutes showed their resilience despite the challenges faced during the match.

PSG's upcoming challenges

Currently sixth in the league phase, PSG faces a challenging schedule ahead, including matches against Bayern Munich on November 10, a trip to Chelsea on the 18th, and a game against Juventus on December 16. Despite a draw against Real Madrid (1-1) and a heavy defeat against Louvain (5-0), PSG has shown signs of renewal following their painful elimination last year, where they finished second last in the league phase with only two points.

Defensive performance against City

Despite Manchester City's overall dominance, PSG's defense, featuring French internationals Mbock and Thiniba Samoura, contained the Citizens relatively well. The biggest chances for City came from Shaw, who was dangerous but clumsy in several attempts (14th, 69th, 78th) and failed to score against PSG goalkeeper Oliwia Szperkowska (66th). PSG regularly missed precision in the final touch, which did not worry City much until an animated end of the match, with Tara Elimbi Gilbert immediately responding to Shaw to snatch a draw.
