A new report has named Cape Town in South Africa, Tokyo in Japan, and Mombasa in Kenya as the best-value winter sun holiday destinations for travelers from the UK. The study, called the Winter Sun Holiday Costs Barometer, was conducted by Post Office Travel Money and compared 24 popular holiday spots. It focused on the affordability of standard tourist items such as an evening meal, drinks, insect repellent, and sun lotion. The report did not include the cost of flights or accommodation. This year, the study looked at both short-haul and long-haul destinations, but only included places that could be reached without needing to pass through a Middle Eastern airport. Cape Town has consistently ranked as the best-value winter sun destination, with prices in the South African city dropping by 9.7% since March. A three-course evening meal for two people, including a bottle of house wine, cost £39.26 in Cape Town. In contrast, the same meal in Scarborough, Tobago — the most expensive destination surveyed — cost £119.26. Mombasa in Kenya had a cost of £42.78 for the meal, while Tokyo in Japan came in at £48.50. Among European destinations, the Algarve in Portugal, Costa del Sol in Spain, and Tenerife in the Canary Islands were the cheapest of the eight European resorts surveyed. Looking at the overall top ten cheapest destinations, four were in Asia: Penang in Malaysia, Phuket in Thailand, Colombo in Sri Lanka, and Tokyo. This highlights that travelers may find better value in Asian locations compared to some European or Caribbean spots. Laura Plunkett, head of Post Office Travel Money, said the research showed significant differences in the cost of basic tourist items, especially in the Caribbean and Europe. She encouraged travelers to do some basic research on holiday prices before making a booking, as this could help them save money.
