Dieudonné M'Bala M'Bala, a French comedian and former actor known for his provocative style and controversial statements, has been sentenced to six months in prison under electronic monitoring by the Paris correctional court. He was also fined 5,000 euros and faces three years of ineligibility for public office. Additionally, he must pay 1,000 euros and a symbolic euro to the European Jewish Organisation and Laurent Nuñez, the interior minister. The sentence was announced on Thursday, September 17, following his prosecution for a video he posted on the social media platform X on October 7, 2024—the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israeli soil, which killed over 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The video, which was viewed over a million times, included statements where Dieudonné praised "a wonderful, extraordinary, fairy-tale date." However, the court noted that he later clarified he was referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s birthday, who was born on October 7, fifteen years earlier. Despite this clarification, the court ruled that his remarks involved an "instrumentalization" of the date and used a "rhetorical procedure" to present the terrorist attacks in a favorable light. The court emphasized that his words risked trivializing the gravity of the event. In another incident, Dieudonné posted a video after a fire at a synagogue in La Grande-Motte (Hérault) in August 2024. In the video, he suggested the incident could be "a response to the hatred and racism unleashed without restraint by some Jews in France since October 7." The court deemed this statement as "apologizing for terrorism," noting that it could be interpreted as justifying or downplaying the attack. Additionally, Dieudonné criticized Laurent Nuñez, who was then the police prefect of Paris, after a ban on one of his shows. Using a grotesque filter, Dieudonné referred to Nuñez with offensive language, including calling him "son of your mother the pure! The holy!" to "put [his] balls in order to talk to each other." The court ruled that these statements "exceeded the acceptable limits of the right to freedom of expression," leading to the legal consequences he now faces.
