Elections annulled in Laroque-d’Olmes

The March 2026 municipal elections in Laroque-d’Olmes, a commune in the Ariège department of France, have been definitively canceled by the Council of State, the highest administrative court in the country. This decision follows a legal challenge over alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

Provisional administration appointed

The commune has been placed under provisional administration, with a three-person delegation appointed to manage daily affairs until new elections can be held. The group includes Pascal Coevoet, a retired public finance administrator, Guillaume Degeilh, an official from the Ariège prefecture, and Jean Godemel, a deputy secretary general from the Pamiers sub-prefecture.

Limited authority for the delegation

The provisional administration is restricted to handling routine matters and addressing urgent issues that protect the commune’s interests. Decisions involving new political directions or major policy changes are not within their authority. Residents must wait for the next election to choose their representatives.

Legal dispute leads to annulment

The annulment followed a legal dispute after the March 15, 2026, election, in which outgoing mayor Patrick Laffont won with 53.71% of the vote. Opposition members challenged the result, arguing that pre-election communications may have influenced voters. These included a municipal bulletin and posts on the commune’s Facebook page.

Court confirms annulment

The Toulouse administrative court initially annulled the election in May 2026, citing potential bias in the materials distributed. Patrick Laffont appealed, but the Council of State confirmed the annulment on October 9, stating the irregularities were "likely to affect the sincerity of the vote."

New elections to be organized

With the legal process now complete, the prefecture will soon announce dates for new elections. A provisional administration will continue managing the commune until a new municipal council is elected, ensuring continuity in local governance.
