Jonathan Clauss resigns as captain

Jonathan Clauss has stepped down as captain of OGC Nice, passing the armband to Axel Witsel, a new teammate who joined the club this summer. Clauss had previously taken on the role after the retirement of Dante and the departure of Morgan Sanson, but he decided to leave the position after a challenging start to the season.

Difficult start to the season

The club faced two defeats and two draws in their first four matches of the season, which influenced Clauss’s decision. However, OGC Nice, also known as the Aiglons, have since managed to secure two victories, though their progress was interrupted by the international break.

Clauss scores in key victory

In a match against Strasbourg on Sunday, Clauss played a crucial role, scoring the winning goal in the 81st minute. His shot under the bar came after a strong play with Sofiane Diop, securing the second win in two games under Witsel’s leadership as captain.

Clauss explains his decision

In a post-match interview, Clauss explained that Witsel, a 37-year-old Belgian with significant experience, was well-suited for the captaincy. He emphasized that he would continue to support the team and the coach, even without the armband.

Reduced pressure and improved communication

Clauss noted that relinquishing the captaincy had reduced the pressure on him and improved communication within the team. He admitted that he sometimes frustrates teammates but believes that without the armband, they view him more favorably. Clauss also acknowledged that he has always been strict with himself and others, and the captaincy may have previously created unnecessary stress.
