Liverpool’s women’s team ended a six-game losing streak in the Women’s Super League (WSL) derby against Everton with a 2-0 victory at Anfield. This marked their first derby win in the WSL era, a significant achievement after previous encounters at the same venue had ended in defeat. Goals from Beata Olsson and Cornelia Kapocs secured the win for Liverpool. Gareth Taylor, Liverpool’s head coach, said the team had been undervalued in past matches and that this victory was a deserved break from a long-standing losing trend. He added that Liverpool had been the stronger side throughout the match and should have scored more goals, with Everton’s midfielder Ruby Mace making several key interventions to keep the scoreline tight. Olsson opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a header from a corner, giving Liverpool an early lead. Despite this, the match proved difficult as Everton’s defense held strong, limiting Liverpool’s chances. In the second half, a powerful volley from Vivien Endemann struck the crossbar, and Mace made another crucial save to block a potential goal from Kapocs. The game finally turned in Liverpool’s favor in the closing stages when Kapocs found space to score, sealing the 2-0 result. The victory continued Liverpool’s strong start to the season, with seven points from their opening four games. Their only loss so far had been to the defending champions, Manchester City. Taylor noted that the team had improved significantly compared to last season, where it took until 25 January to earn the same number of points. This progress has placed Liverpool in a strong position early in the campaign. Everton, however, struggled with a lack of creativity in the final third, with their only two league goals this season coming from own goals. Scott Phelan, Everton’s head coach, acknowledged the need for his team to be more decisive in attacking situations but remained optimistic. He pointed out that they had already secured two wins and were in the middle of the table after four games. Phelan emphasized that the team had talented players in the final third and was confident they would contribute more as the season progressed.
