A survey by Plan International, which included 5,000 young girls and women aged 15 to 24 in Peru, Senegal, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh, highlights the negative effects of climate change on their health, lives, and rights. Nearly 90% of the girls said climate-related disasters have serious consequences for their lives, leading to pressure on resources and household instability. This is often due to the loss of income and school closures, particularly in Bangladesh, Kenya, Peru, and Zimbabwe.
The report points out that 68% of young girls and women face challenges in accessing sexual and reproductive health services. Additionally, nearly half (49%) report more health issues during pregnancy and childbirth, while 50% have experienced limited access to menstrual products and clean water. These issues can lead to greater health risks and fewer opportunities for education and personal development.
The survey also found an increase in child marriages, with 36% of the women reporting this trend. Furthermore, 11% of the respondents said they were married before the age of 18, and 10% have had unwanted pregnancies. Gender-based violence was reported by 28% of the participants, with this number rising to 60% in Zimbabwe, the country most affected by drought among the five studied.
The findings were published in a report titled Change Their Future: The Situation of Girls in the World in 2026 on October 5, the same day the preparatory meeting for COP31 began. COP31 is the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to take place in Antalya, Turkey, in November. Plan International is urging governments to provide dedicated funding for health and sexual and reproductive rights, ensure access to contraceptives, menstrual products, and services for sexual and gender-based violence, and guarantee the continuation of education to reduce the risks of child marriage, school dropout, and sexual exploitation.
