Marc Marquez, the reigning MotoGP world champion, took the lead in the riders' championship after securing victory at the San Marino Grand Prix on Sunday, September 13, at the Misano circuit in Italy. His win brought him level with his Spanish teammate Jorge Martin, both riders now holding 274 points after 14 races of the season. While they are tied in points, Marquez has a significant advantage in race wins, with five victories compared to Martin’s one. Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi, who started the race from pole position, crashed out on the second lap during his home grand prix. Marquez, riding a Ducati, claimed the win by just 0.657 seconds over his younger brother Alex, who also rides for Ducati. Pedro Acosta of Spain finished in third place. Jorge Martin, who had previously led the championship, struggled to keep up with the front-runners on his Aprilia bike and ended the race in fifth place. Marquez also won Saturday’s sprint race, a shorter race held before the main grand prix. After his victory, Marquez said, "There are a lot of races to go. Now we are leading but the most important thing is that here we took 37 points. Next weekend we have another race and the important thing is that I feel super calm and relaxed and I will try to do my maximum as always." This win marked a strong return for Marquez, who had missed part of the season due to injury, and he has gained 203 points in the past seven grands prix. The championship will continue in Austria for the next race weekend, scheduled from Friday to Sunday, September 18-20. Despite Marquez’s victory, the factory Aprilia team remains in the lead of the team standings. This is due to the strong performances of Jorge Martin, who finished second in the riders' standings, and Marco Bezzecchi, who came in third individually, contributing to the team’s overall position.
