France Nature Environnement Vaucluse (FNE 84), an environmental organization based in the southern French department of Vaucluse, has been forced to vacate its office after the local government of Carpentras, affiliated with the far-right party Rassemblement national, decided not to renew its lease. The association had occupied a municipal building for about 20 years and must leave by December 31, according to a recent statement. The city hall now offers a shared meeting room that requires prior booking—a setup that FNE 84 says is insufficient for its operations, which include employing two staff members, hosting civil service volunteers, and coordinating with a large number of local volunteers. The city hall cited budget constraints as the reason for its decision, explaining that it pays 500 euros per month for the building and provides it to FNE 84 free of charge. However, the association’s president, Claude Ranocchi, expressed strong frustration, calling the move “furious” in an interview with the local newspaper La Provence. The city hall also mentioned fairness concerns, stating in Le Dauphiné libéré that it wants to treat all local associations equally. FNE Vaucluse is a significant environmental group that unites 30 local associations across the region. It is officially recognized for its work in environmental protection and participates in various activities, such as school programs, public consultations, and 69 departmental commissions. The loss of its office space has placed the organization in a difficult position, as it now seeks alternative accommodations and is considering relocating to a different commune that may be more supportive. The situation highlights the tension between local government policies and the needs of non-profit organizations. With its current setup no longer viable, FNE 84 faces the challenge of maintaining its operations while searching for a new location that can accommodate its size and scope. The organization’s potential departure from Carpentras could have broader implications for local environmental initiatives in the area.
