Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world's largest cloud computing company, has confirmed that it is still unable to restore access to some data stored in data centers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which were damaged during a conflict between the United States and Iran. This information, reported by Bloomberg, comes after several months of silence from the company on the issue. The damage occurred during attacks at the start of the conflict, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of Iran’s military, claiming that AWS facilities in Bahrain were targeted due to Amazon's alleged support of U.S. military operations.
Satellite images reportedly confirmed that two AWS data centers in Bahrain were hit. In a recent update, AWS stated that the extent of the damage was more severe than its infrastructure was designed to handle. Many customers in Bahrain had already moved their operations to data centers in other countries after initial attacks in March. However, further damage in April led to the practical shutdown of AWS's local data center network in Bahrain.
In the UAE, most customers managed to restore their services by using backups or copying data from other accessible locations. However, AWS noted that it still could not access data stored in one of its availability zones in the country. An availability zone is a distinct location within a region that helps ensure service continuity in case of an outage. Engineers continue working to recover data and resources in the other two availability zones in the UAE.
AWS has committed to continuing support for customers in Bahrain and the UAE and promised to provide updates on the situation in Bahrain by the start of 2027. As the leading provider of cloud services, AWS operates data centers in many countries, including India, Israel, and several European nations, in addition to its presence in the Middle East.
