Microsoft has decided to stop offering the dedicated Copilot feature in Excel, less than a year after it was first introduced in a beta version. This move follows challenges in integrating artificial intelligence with the strict demands of spreadsheet software. The Copilot function was designed to allow users to type in natural language directly into a cell, prompting Excel to generate automated results. Although Microsoft had initially planned to officially release the feature in early 2027, it permanently removed the function in September 2026. The company explained that generative AI, which powers Copilot, cannot ensure the precise mathematical accuracy needed by financial departments or management teams. As a result, Microsoft now recommends using traditional formulas like SUM or IF for exact calculations.
The decision reflects a focus on improving user experience and simplifying the interface. While the Copilot feature in Excel is being removed, the AI assistant is still available in other areas of Excel. Microsoft has noticed that users tend to prefer interactive, context-based help over complex formulas, which led to the elimination of redundant interface elements. The company stressed that if a feature is not easy to access or use, it is unlikely to be widely adopted by users.
This change highlights a broader shift in how Microsoft is applying artificial intelligence. Rather than focusing on replacing precise arithmetic calculations, the company is emphasizing the qualitative benefits of AI, such as helping with text generation, identifying trends, and creating spreadsheet prototypes. Generative AI is seen as a tool to enhance productivity, but not as a replacement for reliable, deterministic calculation systems. In this context, Copilot is now being redefined for tasks like text synthesis, product sheet creation, and other non-arithmetic functions, rather than for core Excel operations.
