Film premieres in Haiti

The film Marie Madeleine, directed by Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus, is now in theaters and portrays a meeting between a prostitute and a young parishioner.

Setting and context

The film, shot in Jacmel, a coastal city in Haiti, is set against the backdrop of the country's ongoing crisis, including political instability and economic challenges.

Filming decision

Généus, who also plays the leading role in the film, stated that she and her producer, Jean-Marie Gigon, decided to film in Haiti despite the country's deteriorating situation.

Reasons for location choice

She emphasized that filming elsewhere, such as a French territory, was not considered due to the strong connection she and her producer have with Haiti and her personal commitment to the project.

Continuation of Généus's work

The film follows on from Généus's previous work, After Freda (2021), which also explored themes of personal and societal struggle in Haiti.
