Recent rainfall has not significantly improved the water resources situation in Haute-Corse, a region on the French island of Corsica. A meeting held on Thursday at the Office d'Équipement Hydraulique de Corse (OEHC) in Bastia, led by Arnaud Millemann, the secretary general of the prefecture of Haute-Corse, confirmed the ongoing fragility of water reserves. This comes after several months marked by a significant rainfall deficit. In September, the region recorded only 17 percent of the precipitation typically observed at this time of year. According to the prefecture and Météo-France data, September was "the hottest ever recorded in Haute-Corse," and October began with temperatures above average, continuing the exceptionally hot summer experienced by the department. October is also, as of now, in a rainfall deficit, though recent thunderstorms have offered a slight improvement in soil moisture in some areas affected by a record drought from July to September, including the Balagne, Nebbiu, Falasorma, Cap Corse, and Bastia regions.
Temperatures have continued to decrease slowly but remain slightly above seasonal averages. The return of rainfall is only expected to begin on Thursday, October 15. Regarding rivers, the hydrological situation monitored by the OEHC remains the same as last week, and the recent thunderstorms have not led to the replenishment of water stocks. The situation remains fragile after a September with no rainfall contribution. However, the decrease in water consumption has continued "favorably," with a -9 percent reduction since September and a -2.6 percent drop during the week of September 28 to October 4.
In the Bastia area, the supply of drinking water remains ensured thanks to the Golo resource, which now covers almost all the needs of the territory served by Acqua Publica. However, particular vigilance is still necessary for sources that do not have backup solutions, notably in the San Martino di Lota sector. The prefecture notes that "the recent thunderstorms came just in time." Facing these conditions and "considering the water needs and the ongoing strong tension," caution is advised, as recent rains "do not allow sufficient relief for the reduced stocks of the OEHC in the Eastern Plain." The prefecture specifies that the prefectural decree remains at the crisis level for this sector and at the alert level for the rest of the department.
A next water resources committee is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 16, to assess the ongoing situation and determine any necessary measures to manage the water resources in the region.
