The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered has been officially released for PC, becoming available on Tuesday, September 29. The remastered edition is free for all owners of the original game, which was first launched in 2015. The release saw a record number of simultaneous players on Steam, with over 120,000 players online on the day of the update. However, the new version has faced several performance issues, particularly on PC.
CD Projekt Red, the Polish developer behind the game, has advised players to disable the NVIDIA HairWorks feature, which has been identified as a major cause of performance problems on certain configurations. This recommendation was shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday, September 30. The company has not yet provided a timeline for when a patch to fix the issue might be released.
NVIDIA HairWorks is a technology developed by Nvidia to create more realistic rendering of hair, fur, and similar elements through real-time physical simulation and detailed modeling of thousands of strands. While this can produce visually impressive results, the computational cost of simulating so many strands can significantly impact frame rates, even on powerful PCs. The issue with HairWorks in The Witcher 3 has been present since the original game's release in May 2015, when CD Projekt Red warned that it could perform poorly on AMD graphics cards due to the inability to optimize Nvidia's code for them. The same problem remains unresolved even 11 years later.
Internet user Ermin Hamidovic noted the irony of the situation, saying in a YouTube video published on September 30 that "HairWorks has significantly affected performance for about 11 years." In the same video, a 52 percent drop in frames per second was recorded on a PC equipped with an RTX 5070, a mid-range Nvidia graphics card. Another user, HYKoalaFanBoy, reported a significant increase in frames per second after disabling HairWorks, going from about 70 to about 120. The issue is not resolved by cloud gaming solutions either; on GeForce Now, even with the highest-end offer and an RTX 5080, players recorded drops of 15 to 20 frames per second with HairWorks enabled.
In addition to the performance issues, some users have noted that the remastered version has some visual inconsistencies, such as blurry or overly colorful outdoor rendering and excessively dark interiors. However, these can be adjusted through the game's settings. To disable NVIDIA HairWorks in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, players can go to the Options menu, select Video, and disable the NVIDIA HairWorks option. This will result in less realistic or even completely rigid rendering of hair and fur, but it is recommended to do so to avoid performance issues until a patch is released.
