The European Space Agency (ESA) has chosen two European companies, **OVHcloud** and **CGI**, to develop a new digital infrastructure called Digital EO, designed to handle Earth observation data. The project, which will last for 30 months and cost several million euros, involves **OVHcloud** managing the cloud infrastructure and **CGI** overseeing the system’s architecture and integration. The system is expected to manage an enormous amount of data—over 500 petabytes by 2035—which is equivalent to storing millions of high-definition movies. The Digital EO system will be initially deployed in Italy, France, and Germany, with operational support from Poland. It may later expand to other European countries and even Canada. At the core of the system is the Digital EO backbone, which will act as the central hub. **CGI’s** French subsidiary will be responsible for designing and integrating the system. The platform aims to bring together Earth observation data, related services, and processing tools, all hosted entirely on European soil to ensure data sovereignty and security. The exact value of the contract has not been revealed, but it is part of a larger tender worth more than 180 million euros. Other companies selected for the project include **Scaleway**, **StackIT**, and **Post Telecom**. **OVHcloud** highlighted its focus on sovereign cloud solutions and its security certifications from **ANSSI**, France’s national agency for information systems security. In addition to the Digital EO project, the ESA has announced a partnership with **Mistral AI**, a French artificial intelligence company. This collaboration aims to enhance AI technologies used in Earth observation, including the Earth Virtual Expert (EVE) project. The integration of Mistral AI models is expected to improve the analysis and interpretation of Earth observation data, supporting more accurate environmental monitoring and research.
