Train ticket sales for the upcoming Christmas travel season have officially begun, with Trenitalia launching on September 23 and SNCF following a few days later on September 30. Trainline, a popular online platform that compares train ticket prices from various railway companies, has advised travelers to book early to maximize travel options and potentially save up to 30% on ticket prices. A recent study by Trainline, published on September 23, analyzed bookings on several major routes and found that train availability tends to decrease significantly even several weeks before departure. For instance, on the Paris-Nantes route, over 43% of trains are already marked as full four weeks before departure, compared to 24% six weeks in advance. Similarly, on the Paris-Toulouse route, 33% of trains are full six weeks before departure, rising to nearly 50% four weeks before. Trenitalia tickets for popular routes, including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, and Chambéry, are already available on Trainline. Clément Bretagnolle, commercial director of the booking platform, explained that travelers can currently compare times and prices for journeys up to January 10. However, SNCF will later expand the booking options for travel between December 13 and January 6, 2027. According to the study, booking early can lead to significant savings. On the Paris-Strasbourg route, for example, the average price at the start of sales was around 66 euros per passenger, compared to 94 euros during the week of travel—a difference of 28 euros, or nearly 30% savings. On the Paris-Bordeaux route, the price difference reaches 18 euros per passenger, representing a 21% saving, while on the Paris-Nantes route, the savings amount to 11 euros, or 21%. These findings were based on a study that analyzed searches and bookings made for travel from December 20 to December 28, 2025. For availability, Trainline examined the proportion of trips that appeared as "full" in searches conducted at different times between the start of sales and the week of travel, focusing on major routes departing from Paris. The price comparisons were made between the prices observed at the beginning of the sales period and those recorded during the week of travel. The study highlights the importance of early booking, especially for popular routes, to secure seats and reduce costs. As the Christmas travel season approaches, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and take advantage of the price differences that can be found by booking well in advance.
