Egypt's military support offer to Saudi Arabia

Egypt has stated it is prepared to provide military support to Saudi Arabia if requested, but explicitly excluded any offensive against Yemen, according to reports. President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi made this clarification during the Egypt 2026 Forum on Wednesday, October 21.

Conditions on military involvement

President al-Sissi emphasized that any support would be for "defending the territory and the borders of the Kingdom," and reiterated that Egypt had "never cooperated with the aim of conducting combat beyond our borders." The president also indicated that Egypt would consider protecting the territory of any other Arab country that requested assistance, while stressing the importance of preserving regional stability and restoring it in countries such as Sudan, Libya, and Somalia.

Parliament's cautious approach

On October 17, President al-Sissi had requested authorization from the Egyptian Parliament to provide military support to Saudi Arabia if requested. The parliament postponed its decision until October 26, following several sessions. Some members of parliament requested more details on the objectives, duration, and cost of a potential mission, as well as the risks faced by Egyptian soldiers.

Historical sensitivities

A direct intervention remains a sensitive issue in Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world. In the 1960s, Egypt under Gamal Abdel Nasser had sent thousands of soldiers into the civil war in North Yemen, a campaign that left a lasting impression and was later compared to the Vietnam War.

Egypt's past involvement in Yemen

Cairo had previously joined the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen in 2015, providing naval and air forces and deploying warships in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. In the context of regional tensions, a high-level Egyptian delegation visited Riyadh on Wednesday, October 21.

Diplomatic talks in Riyadh

The Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, and the head of intelligence services, Hassan Rashad, met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Badr Abdelatty handed over a written message from President Sissi intended for King Salman, which focused on strengthening bilateral relations and reaffirming Cairo's solidarity with the Saudi kingdom. The two parties also discussed the evolution of the regional situation and the coordination of their efforts.
