Sardines gain attention as beauty secret

A small sea fish from the clupeid family, the sardine, has become a trending topic on social networks, especially among Generation Z, who are promoting it as a beauty secret. Content creators are highlighting its nutritional value, which includes omega-3, proteins, and vitamins D and B12.

Dermatologist explains sardine benefits

Martine Baspeyras, a dermatologist and president of the French Society of Aesthetic Dermatology, explained in Le Monde that sardines offer benefits for the heart, brain, and skin. Their anti-inflammatory properties may help with skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, and they contain vitamins D and B12, iodine, and selenium with less mercury than larger fish like tuna.

Sardine sales rise sharply

The popularity of sardines has led to a noticeable increase in their sales. NielsenIQ figures reported by Le Monde indicate that sardine sales in supermarkets have increased by more than 7% since the beginning of 2026, with a 27% increase among those under 35.

Concerns over sardine sustainability

This surge in demand has raised concerns about the sustainability of sardine fishing. Martin Huret, a researcher at Ifremer, warned about the decrease in the size of sardines linked to ocean warming and advised consumers to prefer sardines from seasonal fishing, between June and November, or consider alternatives like anchovies, which are also rich in nutrients.

Importance of varied diet for skin health

Huret also emphasized the importance of maintaining a varied diet and good lifestyle hygiene for skin health, noting that eating sardines alone will not solve all skin problems.
