OCA offers online astronomy studies

The Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur (OCA) has provided a distance learning option for its observational astronomy module in its master's degree in astrophysics for several years. This allows students to complete part of their studies remotely.

Eligibility for the program

Applicants must have knowledge equivalent to a bachelor's degree in science, specifically with physics and mathematics as core subjects. This ensures students have the necessary background to engage with advanced astrophysical concepts.

Practical opportunities for students

Participants in the program may eventually use one of the OCA's 1-meter telescopes to study various astrophysical objects, including asteroids, galaxies, and exoplanets. This provides hands-on experience with professional observational tools.

Qualification upon completion

The training leads to a DUAO (Diplôme universitaire d’astronomie observationnelle), which certifies general knowledge in astronomy and proficiency in using basic tools of professional observational astrophysics. This qualification is recognized within the academic and research communities.

New session registration dates

Registrations for a new session of the program will open on June 30, 2026, with a deadline for applications set for September 15, 2026. This gives prospective students ample time to prepare and submit their applications.

New findings in Cassiopeia A nebula

Astronomers observed the Cassiopeia A nebula using the Chandra X-ray Observatory and found that certain regions of the nebula move inward rather than outward. This unexpected movement may be caused by a collision with gas particles emitted by the star before its explosion.
