New gas field starts production

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) began production at the Al-Rashad field on October 25. The field, located south of Brega, has the potential to produce up to 50 million cubic feet of gas daily. This gas will support power plants and industrial facilities, aiming to meet rising domestic demand.

Boosting domestic gas supply

The Al-Rashad field is part of broader efforts to strengthen Libya’s gas sector. In July, NOC president Masoud Suleman urged increased investments and partnerships to boost local supply and expand the country’s gas capacity. These efforts include recovering gas that is currently lost through flaring and transporting it to the national network.

Recovery projects underway

At the Bouri field, the Bouri Gas Utilization Project is recovering about 100 million cubic feet of gas per day. Eni, the company leading the initiative, completed the project on October 19, as reported by Agence Ecofin. This project is one of several aimed at reducing gas waste and improving supply efficiency.

New offshore gas discoveries

In March, the NOC and its partners discovered two offshore gas reserves south of the Bahr Essalam field, about 85 km from the Libyan coast. These reserves are estimated to hold over 1,000 billion cubic feet of gas. If developed, they could add 130 million cubic feet of gas to daily production.

Preserving existing gas production

Efforts to maintain existing gas output are also underway. The Sabratha Compression project, led by Eni and Mellitah Oil & Gas, aims to sustain production at the Bahr Essalam field despite natural pressure decline. Eni estimates the project will recover about 800 million cubic meters of gas annually.

Long-term gas production goals

Libya aims to increase its gas production to 4 billion cubic feet per day in three to five years, up from the current 2.5 billion cubic feet daily. This growth will be driven by new production, improved infrastructure, and the recovery of previously lost gas volumes.
