From October 9 to 11, 2026, Lyon will host its third Congress Mission, a three-day event designed to bring together participants to share experiences and reflect on the proclamation of the Gospel in today's society. This congress will occur just two weeks after Pope Léon XIV’s visit to France, which is expected to generate heightened interest and participation. The event will be organized by the eight dioceses of the ecclesiastical province of Lyon, including Lyon, Annecy, Belley-Ars, Saint-Étienne, Valence, Grenoble-Vienne, Chambéry-Maurienne-Tarentaise, and Viviers. These dioceses, each with unique identities and challenges, will collaborate for the first time in organizing the congress. Maïlys de Kertanguy, project leader of the Congress Mission 2026, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that it represents a significant challenge and an opportunity to foster unity.
The Congress Mission will focus on four main objectives: to inspire a renewed commitment to mission, to enable the exchange of best practices, to promote networking, and to provide a missionary experience. The event is open to everyone, including priests, consecrated individuals, young people, parishioners, parents, members of communities or associations, and individuals searching for God without specific labels. The congress will take place at Fourvière, with vigils held in the basilica, within the crypt, or on the steps. The choice of location is significant, as it allows for the gathering of all participants while reaching diverse environments.
The program will include four main themes: the integration of catechumens and neophytes, maintaining a missionary dynamic, missionary work in rural areas, and missionary work in popular areas. Participants can attend round tables or workshops, listen to lectures and testimonies, experience times of prayer and celebrations, and participate in street missions. On Saturday during the day, an initiatives village will gather many actors engaged in the mission. In the evening, three different vigils will be offered, allowing participants to choose the one that best suits them. On the esplanade of the basilica, an artistic vigil will combine theater, storytelling, painting, dance, and singing. In the crypt, a second proposal will combine communal prayer time, praise, and teaching. In the basilica, those who wish can experience a meditative time before the Holy Sacrament.
The Congress Mission will end on Sunday, October 11, the day of the opening of the World Missionary Week, dedicated to the mission of the Church around the world. Maïlys de Kertanguy expressed the hope that participants will leave with a new impetus to announce the Gospel at the heart of their daily reality. Registration for the event can be done on the Hello Asso website, and support can be provided through the website of the Catholic Church of Lyon.
