Southampton is still under scrutiny due to its involvement in what has become known as the "Spygate" soccer scandal. The controversy centers around allegations that the club improperly filmed rival teams' training sessions to gain a competitive edge. This has led to ongoing criticism from rival teams and fans, particularly as Southampton continues its campaign in England's second-tier Championship. Ahead of a match between Southampton and Wrexham, Wrexham's co-owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, released a short video referencing the scandal. In the video, they highlighted the importance of privacy, specifically pointing out the unauthorized filming of opponents' practice sessions by Southampton last season. The video also referenced an incident where an intern from Southampton was caught filming a Middlesbrough training session from behind a tree, which led to an investigation by the Football Association. As a result of the investigation, Southampton was banned from the promotion playoffs and received a four-point deduction at the start of the current season. The Football Association also charged Southampton's manager, Tonda Eckert, with bringing the game into disrepute. An arbitration panel described the actions as "a contrived and determined plan from top down to gain a competitive advantage." Wrexham had previously criticized Southampton during the offseason, using social media to post details of their match with a spy emoji and a calendar reminder to "Check Training Ground" for unauthorized visitors. Southampton's first game of the season was at Watford, where fans taunted Eckert's team, even with Watford's mascot participating by gesturing with binoculars. Similarly, Bristol City fans sang a song referring to Southampton as cheats in the opening seconds of their Championship game. Southampton supporters, meanwhile, were heard singing: "We spy when we want, we spy when we want, we are Southampton, we spy when we want." Despite the controversy and early-season challenges, Southampton has shown resilience, winning four games and drawing two others to climb to ninth place in the Championship standings. With the season still in progress, the club is now in a position to push for a playoff spot or even one of the two automatic promotion places, in a bid to return to the Premier League.
